WZRD: The Review

Photobucket

For all you Kid Cudi fans out there, I'm sure you know that his and Dot da Genius' album, "WZRD" dropped today - make sure you cop it.  Now to be honest, it's not exactly the "Man on the Moon" we're used to, but if you ever wondered what a rock star Cudder would sound like, you got it.

And it's pretty awesome if I do say so myself.  No, it's not the typical rap album from him.  Hell, it's not even considered a Rap album, but if you can look over that fact, then keep reading...

Dot da Genius came hard with the beats on this one, especially on songs like "Brake" and "The Arrival," which are mostly just beats.

My favorite songs on the album are "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" and "Efflictim." "Upper Room" is pretty dope as well. Of course I love his long song dedicated to his girl, "Teleport to Me, Jamie," but that's a given, plus that's been out a while.  We definitely saw a softer side of Cudi  this time around, and it's appreciated and welcomed- he's had a rough past few years.  His daughter is almost one now, and this time last year he was dealing with ending his hard drinking and cocaine use.  We're here for you man, salute.

If you follow him on his Tumblr you'd see that he put up a pic of his new tats today- two eerie-looking slit wrists- yes, with the blood red color and all.  With that he wrote this, written underneath the pic:
"The old Scott is dead...slit wrists."

Well then...I do hope he doesn't mean the old rapping Scott, because that would suck REALLY bad.  And yes I'm still waiting for another mixtape like "A Kid Named Cudi." (A girl can hope, right?)

Let me know what y'all think, and Dream On...

XXL Freshmen Class 2012

Every year I look forward to XXL's Freshmen Class.  I've seen a lot of rappers I like become famous off these spreads.  Lupe, Kendrick Lamar, Cudi, K.R.I.T., J. Cole, Wale, Wiz and so many more have graced these covers year after year- and for the majority, they all deserved to take those spots.

This year? Ehh, mixed reviews on some of the choices, BUT I can definitely see a few of these rappers following some of the greatest out right now.

Now before I go in, I have to say that when I first saw this cover, I had only heard of 6 out of the 10 rappers on here (one of them is even on my blog header).  So for the ones I didn't know much about, I gave each of them a few listens on some of their hottest songs:

Danny Brown- His flow reminds me of Tech N9ne buts its a lot different at the same time. I like it, but compared to other people on this list, he's just okay to me.  Gotta listen to him more to really give more input, but he's alright.

Hopsin- Saw the video "Sag My Pants" and automatically thought "Odd Future and Hopsin would get along great."  He's that blunt rapper that surprises us with what comes out of his mouth (think Eminem).  Again, another rapper I haven't heard of before but I won't sleep on him, y'all shouldn't either. Thumbs up.

Macklemore- I wanna go for Alternative Rap but because I haven't heard more than a handful of songs from him, I won't judge- yet.  His producer Ryan Lewis is raw.  Macklemore is smart and tells stories, which gives him my utmost respect already.  Thumbs up for dude.

Don Trip- Already signed to Interscope and a song featuring the soulful Cee Lo Green, Don's rap career already looks pretty promising.  His accent makes his flow sound better, especially on songs like "The Life," his "Oh Let's Do It" freestyle and his "I'm On One" freestyle, all three of them in which he goes in on.  This Memphis rapper gets compared to Wayne a lot- and you can see why- but his style is unique in its own, enough to where I can see why he's already signed.  He just may be the next to blow up.  I stand by the man.  Big ups to him.  Might just be my favorite '12 Freshmen so far.

Now honestly, I don't feel I need to speak much on Roscoe Dash...Why you ask?

If you live in or anywhere around the Southeast then you know R-O-S-C-O-E Dash been out for a long ass time.  And he's not even a decent rapper compared to these other dudes (and Azalea)- he's a club rapper (a rapper that makes songs for the club).  Yeah he got hits, but I doubt we'll ever here a banger from guy that will make us think "OMG we got the next Tupac!!!"

So on that note, I'll move on to French Montana.  This my man right here- and he's been out for a hot little minute, but if you not from New York or the surrounding areas then you might not know of him.  Although, unless you've been sleeping under a rock, you've had to have heard his hit "Shot Caller," and the remix and remix video that came out not too long ago.  French first grabbed my attention with his song "So High" with Curren$y released back in '10, and I still play it like it just came out. He's signed with Diddy now, *long sigh* so if Puff don't push him to the side like the rest of his artists then I expect great things from him.

Moving right along...

Iggy Azalea is the truth.  A lot of people have been giving her dirty looks for her "runaway slave- master" line on her song "D.R.U.G.S.," but if you tried to understand it and looked past it, this girl has a lot of potential.  T.I. caught on quick and is now the executive producer on her upcoming album (also on Interscope with labelmate Don Trip) "My World," due to release in June.  Her mixtape "Ignorant Art" is hot- make sure you download that.  I'm really hoping the best for this Australian bombshell, who is dating the hot up-and-coming rapper, A$AP Rocky- the female rap games NEEDS it.  And until Eve and past female rappers decide to make the comeback that is wayyy past due, Iggy can hold down the throne in the mean time.

Machine Gun Kelly won my heart when he made "Wild Boy" with my main man Waka (joke, guys- but I do love this man for the hype he gives me with every one of his songs).  Now honestly, right now I'm sleeping on dude because his other songs aren't the greatest, but I'm rooting for him.  He deserved a spot in the mag.

Kid Ink is another person I've heard but am sleeping on right now.  He's another rapper that loves to talk about all the weed paraphernalia he consumes on a daily basis.  Yeah his song "Stank in My Blunt" is poppin' but, more subject in your rapping, pretty please? :D

Now lets talk about the one person who deserved this more than anyone on this year's cover.  Yes suh', I'm talking about the Astronaut Kid, Atlanta's finest- Future.  If you didn't follow my last blog where I described my love for this man, I'll let you know here that this guy is FIRE.  Now I admit, I did say that I didn't consider him a rapper but after listening to him since early last year, I can say dude has some bars. This past year he has blown up all over the South, making us beef it up and jig our hearts out to "Watch This," "Tony Montana," "Jordan Diddy," "Gone to the Moon," and countless others.  He had the biggest hype to me in 2011, and he definitely earned his spot on XXL's Freshmen list.  FREEBANDZ!

Now that you know how I feel about the list this year, now its your turn.  What's up?  Leave a comment below.

Oh yeah, and make sure you go to your local market or newsstand and pick up a copy of XXL's April issue to read the exclusives of this year's class, out March 20th.

"Grew Up Fast" and grew on me...

Now I'm not gonna lie, when J. Cole first came out on the scene I was NOT feeling dude like that.  He just didn't catch me like the other rappers I like.  I heard his album and was impressed, became a fan.  Then a few friends of mine put me on to his new track, "Grew Up Fast," and now...

It's official.  Dude's a force to be reckoned with, heard from yours truly.

When I first heard the song the sample of "The Double Cross" by David Ruffin, I was impressed, being that the original song is a pretty great one.  Then ya boy start spittin' and I just...

Well y'all should already know that part.  Cole went in.

"It's Cole, it's only right I brought back the soul
Y'all got way too electro, damn near techno
Halfway homo, way too metro"

Haha, I love it.  Shots fired.

Thanks for bringing back the soul Cole.  Listen to some real hip-hop below:

Rihanna and Chris Brown: The Remixes

First off, Happy Birthday Rih Rih!!!!

So I have been waiting for the Birthday Cake Remix all day.  And here it goes...

Birthday Cake Remix - Rihanna feat. Chris Brown

I'm a fan of it already.  Yeah we all know what happened three years ago, and if they can forgive and forget, then so can we, and all is good in the world again.  Let's focus on the music.

And if you're not with it, maybe this one will change your mind.  Rihanna is also on his remix for "Turn Up the Music."  I like this one better. After seeing Breezy perform this on the Grammys and seeing his dance moves in the video I was sold.

Turn Up the Music Remix - Chris Brown feat. Rihanna

Maybe a video for one (or both) of the videos will surface?

Slight Work

Couldn't come up with a catchy title this time around, but no need.  The song in itself does it for me.

One of my favorite tracks from Wale's "Ambition" album featuring Detroit's own Big Sean finally has a hot new video to go with it.  It was cool to see that Chris Breezy got in the director's seat this time around to bring us a video that's visually stimulating enough to go perfectly with the siren-infused beat.  Reminds me of home...

I can dig it.
Making the video

Check it out below:

Here's a dose of DOPENESS.

...no literally, it's actually the song title.

Produced by Dot Da Genius, this is a Kid Cudi song that he started back in 2008, performing at a few shows - this is just the mastered audio.  Nice track, I like the piano beat.  Cudder said in concert this will be on his new album, "WZRD" (Out the 28th of this month).

I have to say, I'm impressed from what I have heard on this album already.  Can't wait til it drops.

And I run it...

Kendrick Lamar is back with a new song, "Cartoon & Cereal." Different, and the beat is awesome. Thumbs up. Definitely gotta see dude at Coachella in concert one day...

Hot or Not: Christina Milian's "Mr. Valentine"

So Christina Milian is now the newest person signed to Young Money. And she has a new song out called "Mr. Valentine."  Semi-cute pop song- I guess.

Mr. Valentine - Christina Milian

Now lets get real...

Is she really that good of a singer to begin with?

Wayne does the most a lot when it comes to Young Money.  He signs people and you never really hear much from them, unless their names are Drake or Nicki.  Then he signs act that are better off acting and not the best musically ( Do I need to scream Tyga's name when it comes to subpar rapping skills?).

I mean many people will agree she's great to look at, granted.  But that's all the shine I'll be giving her on this blog if he continues to create music that is just not worth being heard.

What do yall think? Hot or Not?

And hey Wayne, you would have been better off signing Amber Rose...

Loaded - Amber Rose*
*Which in actuality is not a bad pop song- think Ke$ha

The Return of Earl

Earl Sweatshirt is back!

If you know OFWGKTA then you know Earl.  You also know his mom put him in Samoa's Coral Reef Academy boarding school for a little while ;(

But he's out now, back in LA and putting out music.  He released "Home" last night after he put a video out saying if we wanted to hear the whole song he had to get over 50,000 followers on Twitter.

And well, here it goes...(well, a snippet anyway)

They're Backkkkkkkk! Day 26

26 is back with a brand new video "Made Love Lately."  Glad to see them back on the scene...

...Que where you at?

Lord knows I loved their debut album, even their follow-up.  Definitely had those cds blasting in my house.  Their show was apart of my tv addiction for some time.

Look out for their new album, "A New Day" on Atlantic Records some time this year.

Video after the jump.

Tell Ya Friends!

To be such the big Kid Cudi fan that I am, I couldn't believe how much I slept on his bro Chip Tha Ripper.  This dude is raw. Straight dope.

His new mixtape released last week.

While listening to his new mixtape (and downloading his others as I found out how good he is), I had to look up and see if Cudi was featured on a few of them (he's only on two, sampled on another).  They sound so similar, Ripper's flow however may be (!!!) a little better than Cudi's (this hurts me to say).  He's comical, doesn't talk about weed paraphernalia as much as Cudder, and makes feel good "we makin' it" music, unlike his moody homeboy.  This Cleveland-born rapper will have his first album, "Charles Worth," out this summer.  Definite cop.

If you know me, you know I love rappers who tell a story, and he's definitely up there when it comes to it.  And don't get me started on the beats.  His producers (hisself included) are too nice, as well as his features (Wale, CyHi Da Prynce, Cudi of course, and Krayzie Bone).  Download this mixtape here on Dat Piff.
